Kristen Ford Talks On Balancing Life As An Indie Artist

Judging other people or focusing on what is fair or unfair or comparing is just kind of a waste of time. We all are creating our own reality here

How are you taking charge of your music right now?

I think I'm learning to do less, and do more when I'm inspired and in the flow. It can be an exhausting venture to be an independent artist, if you aren't careful you just work all the time and don't enjoy the ride.

How are you charging up while promoting your latest and greatest?

Well I recently adopted a puppy, he is 10 weeks old and keeps me on my toes! I love having little snoop dogg around to keep me in the moment and remind me to be silly and laugh, fall down and get back up. Also he is so ADD I don't feel so bad about my own distractions.

What is a big declaration you want to make known when it comes to your music?

this is me!

Is there more of you as an artist that fans haven't seen yet?

Of course. I am always expanding and growing, it's fun to see old music videos and hear my debut album from 2008, I have changed so much to what I'm putting out now. In 2020 I had a supporting role in a feature film and that sparked a love of acting and I have been studying screenwriting, acting technique etc. It's awesome to take those elements and apply them to music in a new way. I'd like to do it all.

What do you have lined up performance wise for your fans to listen to the music?

I play the southeast pretty regularly, I'm based in Nashville TN, and this spring and summer I'll be on a nationwide tour. I also did a live EP with a non profit here called Music Neighbors, they recorded the full band playing in the studio, that's a great little video if you want a taste of the live show.

Is there something that you could take it or leave it when it comes to the music industry?

I find it's lighter and breezier to just focus on what you want to do. Surround yourselves with people you respect and admire. Judging other people or focusing on what is fair or unfair or comparing is just kind of a waste of time. We all are creating our own reality here. Mine is pretty fucking fantastic.

Before you get into what you'll be making next, what is something that is the deal breaker for you on whether the project gets made?

I guess just the follow-through. I tend to have a lot of ideas. Sometimes a project is mostly done and lays dormant because it isn't the right time, or maybe just not up to par. I like to feel a lot of joy in releasing anything! Lucky us it's easier than ever to hit on a global scale.
